How training your brain affects neuroplasticity.
Neuroplasticity
This 15 minute presentation starts with a review of the nervous system and then describes why active learning, not passive learning, will make the fastest changes in neuroplasticity of the brain and lead to neurologic changes that will result in durable memories. Intelligence will then be discussed and contrasted to training. Medical students will see that training the brain, not innate intelligence is the key to being successful in medical school. Based on suggestions in the book Make it Stick: The Science of Successful Learning by Paul Brown, Henry Roediger III, and Mark McDaniel (2014), a specific example, learning the muscles of the body, will be used to demonstrate that a growth mindset, deliberate practice and desirable difficulties are needed to master the overwhelming amount of material that medical students are required to learn.
