Welcome to my Understanding by Design (UbD) workshop. This is a three part workshop that will help you, the instructor, understand why understanding, not learning is the goal and how to develop an effective curriculum that will enable students to understand content and use these skills and understandings in the world.

The Understanding by Design curriculum planner is a three part series that stresses alignment. For that reason, the workshop has been divided into three sections. It is best to work through one section at a time. Each section is organized in the following way: a brief overview of that section, a walk-though description of each component of the template in that section, a downloadable copy of the template and a video describing that section and how to complete the template. At the end of each section, you will find a short quiz to test your mastery of that section. When you have successfully completed all steps in the curriculum planner you will have a fully aligned curriculum that allows your students to demonstrate understanding and independently transfer these skills outside of the classroom where they will get practical use.

Instructor Information

My name is Leann Poston. I graduated from WSU-BSOM and did my residency at Dayton Children's Hospital. I was a practicing pediatrician for 12 years. I then taught Anatomy and Physiology, Medical Genetics, ICM and AP Biology at Carroll HIgh School for the next 12 years in order to spend more time with my children. Currently, I am employed at WSU-BSOM as the Career Advisor in the Office of Student Affairs and Admissions. My areas of interest are: medical professionalism, curriculum design, technology and interpersonal communication skills.

UbD Overview
|
UbD is a curriculum planning tool that focuses on understanding and the ability to transfer knowledge outside of the classroom. The curriculum is planning is a three stage process: 1. Identify Desired Results 2. Determine Acceptable Evidence and 3. Plan the Learning Experiences and Instruction Accordingly. Curriculum is planned this way to avoid trying to cover a textbook in its entirety or mistaking fun activities for true learning. The curriculum planner stresses alignment. Reference is made to determining standards and then aligning essential questions and understandings to these standards with the end goal being independent mastery of transfer goals (Wiggins & McTighe, 2011). .

In this video, Jay McTighe explains the curriculum planner Understanding by Design and the importance of aligning a curriculum and striving for student understanding. He gives advice to teachers to think big, but start small (Hawker Brownlow Education, 2013).
